Line Trap

The Line Trap is a critical component of the PLC system, it is a coil connected in series with the High Voltage power line that is designed and manufactured to meet the electrical, mechanical and environmental requirements of the IEC 60353 standard. Its main purpose is to present a high impedance at the carrier frequency and very low impedance at the transmission line frequency.

The tuning unit in conjunction with the value of the inductance of the main coil provides the necessary blocking characteristics, so the end result is that the line current flows normally in circumstances that the high frequency frequencies are not dissipated in the substation. We can provide a wide range of Line Traps up to 1100V and 5000A.

Design

The Line Trap is manufactured to comply with a wide range of operating conditions in terms of Inductance, direct and short circuit currents and voltages, all under the IEC 60353 standard. In the case of a CLOSED type Wave Trap, the main coil is encapsulated in a high resistance resin.

The windings are made of aluminum wire which are encapsulated by a resin impregnated with fiberglass. The current carrying connectors are carefully soldered to ensure a very robust Line Trap. The assembly can be Vertical or Horizontal, Suspension or Pedestal.

Tuning Unit

The tuning device, connected in parallel with the main coil, forms a blocking circuit that provides high impedance in a specific frequency range of the Carrier Wave. The bandwidth of a line trap is the frequency range over which the wave trap provides a specified minimum blocking impedance or resistance. The different types of tuning include:

·      Single Frequency

·      Double Frequency

·      Wideband

The tuning device consists of various combinations of capacitors, resistors and inductors of comparatively low power ratings. To protect the tuning circuit from mechanical damage and environmental conditions, it is mounted inside one or more fiberglass cylinders that are filled with a resin compound and sealed. The tuning device is mounted on one of the lower wishbones inside the main coil.
